TLC Springwater is proud to sponsor the 24th Annual Walk for Hunger held on Saturday May 12. This year marks TLC’s fourth year as a sponsor in the annual event to raise money for hungry children. Sponsored by the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland, the walk will help feed children during the summer months when school lunches are not available and children are at a great risk of going hungry.

TLC will provide bottled water for all walkers taking the 3 mile walk from the Burke Lakefront Airport, through downtown Cleveland to the North Coast Harbor.

In addition to the company’s contribution, TLC employees, family members and friends will join together as a team representing the Greater Cleveland Church of Christ to walk in support of the Hunger Network’s 100 hunger centers and hot meal programs.

“TLC Springwater is proud to partner in this important effort to curb hunger in Cleveland. Across the state of Ohio, there are so many children living in homes without enough food on the table. I applaud The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland for taking steps to ensure no child in Cleveland goes to bed hungry,” said Kazell Pugh, TLC President.

The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland is Cuyahoga County’s largest direct emergency food distribution network, serving an average of 60,000 residents each month, 41% or 25,000 of whom are children.

To participate in the 24th Annual Walk for Hunger or for more information on the event, visit http://www.hungernetwork.org/info.asp?content=B-walkforhunger.

Does the simple act of turning on your faucet provoke thought or worry that your tap water is safe? Do you question if your family should drink it or if you need to be concerned?

Twenty-five years ago, we didn’t even give these types of questions a second thought, but with today’s understanding of our environment and the importance of clean water, we are making better choices about our health and safety when it comes to the water we drink.

So if your preference is tap over the convenience and taste of bottled water, how can you ensure it is safe for you and your family? Most community water suppliers deliver high quality drinking water to millions of Americans every day. Despite many of the myths about tap water safety, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) regulation of the public water supply is ex-tensive, well enforced and fre-quently tested. Your local supplier is even required to inform you within 24 hours if the tested water does not meet EPA standards.

The EPA regulates the community water systems that supply drinking water to most Americans. Every community water system is required to publish a yearly “consumer confidence report” detailing contaminants or viola-tions of water quality standards. These reports enable American’s to make knowledgeable decisions about the water they drink. For more information on your local drinking water or to view the Annual Drinking Water Quality Report for your area, visit: http://water.epa.gov/drink/local/

If you are one of the 15% of Americans that rely on your own private water well, the EPA does not have the authority to regulate the quality of the water. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to take precautions to ensure protection of private drinking water supplies. If your water comes from your own well, the EPA advises that you test it annually, especially if you see signs of trouble like corroded pipes, strange odors or discolored water. For more information on how to protect your private water source, visit: http://water.epa.gov/drink/info/well/

The best protection for Americans when it comes to knowing what is in the water you drink, is to stay informed, be observant and get involved! Make sure you know the water quality standards and testing frequency of your local area. Review the annual consumer confidence report from your supplier and keep apprised.

For Immediate Release
March 7, 2012

Alexandria, VA – The international Bottled Water Association (IBWA) today issued the following statement regarding a
March 6, 2012, New York Times article concerning recent increases in children’s cavity rates:

“The New York Times article, Preschoolers in Surgery for a Mouthful of Cavities, (March 6, 2012), notes that the causes of increased dental problems in young children vary, from a simple lack of brushing to too many sugary foods and beverages. Unfortunately, the article also incorrectly states that drinking bottled water instead of ‘fluoridated tap water’ can contribute to tooth decay. This statement is both inaccurate and misleading. There is absolutely no correlation between consumption of bottled water and an increase in cavities. In fact, bottled water does not contain ingredients that cause cavities, such as sugar.

For consumers who want fluoride in their drinking water and wish to choose bottled water, approximately 20 IBWA member companies make clearly-labeled fluoridated bottled water products under stringent FDA guidelines. For a complete list of these brands, which are available in many markets across the country, please visit IBWA’s website (http://www.bottledwater.org/fluoride).

There are many sources of fluoride, and the amount of fluoride exposure varies greatly by community and individual. Approximately two-thirds of communities in the Unites States fluoridate their public drinking water supplies. Those who live in communities that do not fluoridate public drinking water, who get their drinking water from wells, or who filter their fluoridated tap water will not be getting fluoride in their drinking water. Fluoride is present in many foods and beverages and almost all toothpaste contains fluoride. Too much exposure to fluoride can lead to a condition called fluorosis, which results in stains to the teeth. Consumers should therefore look at how much fluoride they are receiving as part of an overall diet and should contact their health-care provider or dental-care provider for their recommendation.

As a packaged food product, comprehensively regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), bottled water labels must contain the name and place of business of the bottler, packer or distributor, and virtually all bottled water products provide a telephone number. With this information, consumers may contact the bottled water company directly to obtain information about the product. Bottled water companies must also follow fluoride labeling guidelines should fluoride be added to the product or be present at a naturally occurring level as set for the by FDA regulation (21C.F.R. §165.110(b)(4)(ii)(A-D)).”

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is the authoritative source of information about all types of bottled waters. Founded in 1958, IBWA’s membership includes U.S. and international bottlers, distributors and suppliers. IBWA is committed to working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water as a packaged food product, and state governments to set stringent standards for safe, high quality bottled water products.

Over the years, college students have stood together for what they believe in, from civil rights to anti-war policies to the more recent protests against the unequal distribution of wealth, otherwise known as Occupy Wall Street. But no where in history have students banned bottled water. Until now.

The bottle water ban, which started on just a few campuses, has now spread nationwide to more than 20 universities. The colleges have either completely banned the use of plastic bottles altogether, or some have taken a more limited approach with partial bans. This last week, NPR reported that the University of Vermont ended their contract with Dasani, owned by the Coca-Cola company, despite the introduction of their new “plant” bottle.

More From Delish: A Refreshing Look at Water

Support from the bans comes from an organization called Ban the Bottle, a non-profit group which raises awareness about the economic and environmental costs associated with using plastic bottles. The group claims that eight glasses of water a day costs each person 49 cents annually, whereas drinking from plastic containers costs $1,400 per year. Other messages are used to educate consumers on the health risks. According to the Ban the Bottle website, plastic bottles contain antimony — a chemical that in low doses causes depression and dizziness — but that in large doses can even lead to death. While Ban the Bottle highlights the health issues tied to PETs, the chemicals in plastic, their main goal is to promote environmental sustainability.

Last September, the bottle battle made national news when students at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, protested in favor of water bottles on campus. The campus’s college Republicans protested to bring bottled water back, even handing out bottled water when their school administration decided to rid the plastic containers from the vending machines. Instead, the campus decided to install 31 “hydration stations,” costing the institution $20,000. Their goal was to make it easier for students to refill their reusable bottles. Chairman of the Minnesota College Republicans, Ryan Lyk, released a statement to the press that said, “Just as the government should not ban plastic bottles in America, a school administration should not ban the sale of plastic water bottles on their campus.”

More From Delish: Cool Beverage Alert: Tap Water is Trending

The controversy over bottled or tap is not limited to the students and college administrations. Manufacturers are seeing the movement as a threat. To counter that, they have come out with their own video on YouTube stating that the students have “misinformation” about the plastic bottles. One of their arguments is that bottled water is a good alternative to the more sugar-laden beverages they would normally reach for.

Bottled water is big business. According to NPR, the industry took in $10.6 billion in revenue in 2010 and they saw about five percent growth in 2011. But the industry is concerned this movement will impact sales in 2012.

The main question that is on their minds and others who are opposed: What happened to freedom of choice?

What do you think? Is it right for a college administration to ban bottles?

February 14, 2012 – Cleveland, OH – In effort to continue to support our local communities, TLC Springwater is proud to be a sponsor of the 2012 DISTRICT, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING (MLK) JR. ORATORICAL CONTEST. This year’s event hosted by Mt. Zion Oakwood Village will be held on February 25, 2012. TLC Springwater will provide complimentary bottled water to all attendees at the event.

Each year, students in Cuyahoga County are invited to participate in the countywide contest, which is held in honor of the legacy of Dr. King. The 2012 theme is “Remember, Celebrate, Act! A Mission Still to Fulfill.” This year, Cuyahoga County expects approximately 50 students in grades K-12 to participate in this special tribute to Dr. King. Students will deliver five minutes speeches to a panel of judges and are encouraged to discuss topics they feel align with this year’s theme. The top three finalists from the region will advance to the State contest in Columbus, Ohio.

“TLC Springwater believes strongly in our community and in supporting worthwhile charitable events.” said Kazell Pugh, TLC President. “We are especially pleased to be part of this important day. It is particularly important to create opportunities for our young people that stimulate thinking and learning. The MLK event inspires our students to imagine and explore how the legendary Dr. King would feel about our society’s progress to remove prejudices against race in the 21st Century.”
